Root Canals

Are you having a prolonged dental sensitivity to heat and cold or pain that comes and goes? Do you have intense dental pain that may be accompanied by swelling in your mouth? It is possible that your tooth needs a root canal treatment and you should be seen by a dentist right away.

When a tooth needs a root canal treatment, it is critical that the treatment is done conveniently, efficiently and painlessly. At Pinebrook Dentistry, we truly care about your comfort and dental health. Our team of trained professionals at Pinebrook Dentistry offers a comfortable environment and same day appointments to make sure that you can get back to your normal daily activities as quickly as possible.

Why You Need a Root Canal

A root canal treatment is needed when the pulp tissue contained in the root canals becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection of the pulp tissue occurs due to deep decay, repeated restorations, cracks, and chips, or history of injury to the tooth. At times, patients are not even aware of the infection until routine x-ray reveals the infectious process in the bone surrounding the roots of the tooth. If the pulp infection is left untreated, it can lead to more pain and serious consequences like abscess and loss of the tooth.

What Happens During a Root Canal

Root canal treatment can save teeth that may otherwise become too broken down or infected that removal is the only option. During a root canal procedure, the infected pulp tissue is removed and the root canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped. In cases where the infection has been long-standing, a special medication is placed in the canal space to promote healing of the bone tissue around the roots and the treatment is completed at a later time.

Once the root canals are free of bacteria, they are filled and sealed before a crown or other restoration is placed on the tooth to restore normal function. On teeth that are in the back of the mouth, it is especially important that crowns are placed soon after a root canal treatment to prevent further breakdown of the tooth under normal function.

Root canal procedures can be safely completed painlessly at Pinebrook Dentistry with modern techniques and anesthetics. You may feel some sensitivity after the procedure, especially if there was pain or infection before the treatment was completed. For most patients, any sensitivity can be easily controlled with over-the-counter pain medication. Patients are usually able to return to normal daily activities immediately after the treatment.
